Roxanne Ochoa’s Journey to Leading OCCLC’s Faith-Based Homeschool Program

In a recent episode of "God and Governance," hosted by OCCLC board member Bill Dunlap, Site Director Roxanne Ochoa shared her inspiring journey from being a public school parent to leading the Orange County Christian Learning Centers (OCCLC) program at Harbor Light Church in Costa Mesa. Her story highlights the passion and faith driving OCCLC’s mission to deliver affordable, Christ-centered education.

After moving to Orange County when her son was four, she enrolled him in public preschool but soon felt called to homeschool. “I’ve always had a dream of homeschooling my kids,” Roxanne shared, despite initial doubts about its feasibility. Facing challenges like changing vaccine affidavit laws, she dove into research, contacted Orange County’s homeschooling department, and embraced the opportunity to begin homeschooling. “The Lord has really blessed me,” she said, noting she hasn’t looked back since making the switch.

Two years ago, Roxanne’s prayers for deeper church involvement working with children led her to OCCLC. Her mother, a volunteer at one of OCCLC’s centers, connected her with CEO Darrick Garcia. “I love educating my children and helping other families get into homeschooling,” Roxanne explained. Now, as Site Director at Harbor Light, she oversees seven teachers and thirty-six students, fostering a vibrant community where families grow in faith and learning. The program, running on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM, offers a full school-day experience with a homeschool curriculum, providing parents with flexibility on other days.

OCCLC uses The Good and the Beautiful curriculum for math and language arts, chosen for its user-friendly, “open and go” approach. “It’s easy for families to understand and helps break down complex subjects,” Roxanne noted, addressing the intimidation some parents feel with homeschooling. The recent 2025 graduation ceremony, which Bill attended, showcased the program’s success, with students thriving in a supportive, Christ-centered environment.

Now in its fourth year, OCCLC’s Harbor Light program is growing, and Roxanne invites families to join. “If you’re looking for an alternative to public schools, visit www.occlc.org to learn more and enroll for the fall semester,” she urged. Bill echoed this, emphasizing OCCLC’s role in standing for godly truth in education.

Roxanne’s leadership and faith reflect OCCLC’s mission to empower families and disciple students. Explore our program at www.occlc.org and join our community pursuing academic excellence at an affordable cost, grounded in Christian principles.
